This position is for a Senior Architect who will prepare designs and lead architectural teams in the development and delivery of building designs associated with rail and/ or aviation projects . The rail buildings may include stations (deep underground, shallow, at-grade and elevated), depot/ maintenance facilities and traction power substations. The aviation buildings may include terminal buildings, maintenance facilities, hangar buildings, cargo facilities, and support/ services buildings. The Senior Architect is responsible for direct production of design work by Bechtel as well as for coordinating the scope and integration of work assigned to subcontracted design entities. The position will include work supporting business development and delivery of studies and proposals, and may ultimately transition to a project-specific assignment, typically in a lump-sum, design-build project environment. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, and the desire to innovate designs as well as architecture/ engineering work processes, including BIM modeling production.
Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the architectural work on buildings for rail and/ or aviation projects .
Preparation of original architectural designs layouts, details, drawings and specifications for buildings
Plan and conduct independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of architectural techniques, procedures and criteria to the buildings that are part of rail and/ or aviation projects
Prepare conceptual studies, designs, reports, proposals, value engineering studies or alternate technical concepts (ATCs) in accordance with Bechtel Engineering Procedures
Coordinate design development with other departments which may include construction, estimating, project controls, procurement, and contracts management
Understand and perform the standard architectural work planning, scheduling, and job hour estimating process; conduct independent work requiring judgment in the application of design techniques
Monitor and ensure compliance with project budgets, schedules, quantities and quality requirements
As directed, supervise, coordinate, provide technical direction and assign work to subordinate architects, designers, and drafters who assist on specific assignments
Review and check work of subordinate architects
Coordinate and integrate design work between the architectural discipline, engineering disciplines and other design entities
Review and approve key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings, and change orders for the rail project to which assigned
Interface with clients and stakeholders to make presentations, define project requirements, and obtain contractual and statutory approvals
Prepare procurement and subcontract requisition documents and perform associated technical bid evaluations
Prepare and/or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders
Resolve technical issues with construction and travel to the project’s site to assist as required

Make business trips, or potentially relocate, to construction site, project office or client location as required
Assist in on-the-job-training of assigned personnel and provide input for their performance evaluations.
Knowledge of architectural design, production techniques, building materials, and construction methods for development of rail and/ or aviation building project deliverables.
Understands technical issues and cost related to selection of design features and unique architectural requirements.
Knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and knowledge of principles and practices of related engineering design methods and systems.
Broad knowledge of the building industry, regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to rail and/ or aviation buildings architectural work
Experienced with the practices and procedures of US as well as International Design Codes and Standards, including NFPA 130.
Has experience with engineering work planning, scheduling and cost estimating
Skilled in oral and written communication
Demonstrated graphic presentation skills
Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions
Understanding of engineering planning and control methods
Experienced with producing a full, well-coordinated, detailed set of architectural construction documents
Experienced with coordinating a multi-discipline design team
Experienced with managing knowledge of sustainability and its integration into the design and the construction of rail and/ or aviation buildings
Skilled in assessing the scope of problems and developing practical solutions
Familiar with discipline-specific Autodesk Design suite (e.g. Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks) design workflows and impacts to discipline productivity, schedule, budget, and staffing plans
Has a working knowledge of Autodesk design suite (Revit, AutoCAD) and is proficient in model viewing software (e.g. Autodesk Navisworks) to navigate the 3D model for review, coordination, and guidance of physical model development decisions. Leads formal and informal 3D model reviews.
Experienced with complex/FOAK building design evolution and interfaces with other design disciplines such that he/she is able to predict and safeguard against multidisciplinary design conflicts and space allocation shortfalls
Experienced with managing the development of Revit families and detail libraries
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university
Minimum of fifteen (15) years’ experience in architectural design of buildings, including experience with rail and/ or aviation projects.
US Professional Architects Registration and/ or Professional Architects Registration in a Canadian Province
Practical work experience sufficient to demonstrate competence and breadth in architectural design
LEED certified professional
Experience in customer-facing roles, presenting to customers and working with authorities having jurisdiction
Must have the right to work and remain in the US without visa sponsorship
Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university
Professional Architectural Registration in both the US and Canada
Active participation in professional association(s) for architecture
